The CAS Foreign Members Offer Suggestions on Academy Development

Seven new-elected foreign members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) received their Foreign Member Certificates at the Consultative Meeting of Foreign Members held on June. 10th in Beijing and joined six others to give their voice on the development of the Academy.

BAI Chunli, President of the CAS, presented the certificates to the seven foreign scientists. The scientists were among nine foreign CAS members who were newly elected in 2011.

The Members present gave their suggestions on the advancement of S&T in China from their own experience of working with Chinese partners/institutions. Science funding, principal investigator system, young promising talents breeding & training, and technology transfer evaluation are among the list of their proposals.

"We hope to push the CAS to be in a better position to serve science and technology progress and through which to the various needs of China. In the process of taking the CAS to a higher level, we will continue to need the advice and strong support of our foreign members,” said BAI at the meeting.

The foreign attendees include Prof. Shing-Tung Yau, Prof. Alfred Y. Cho, Prof. Norman N. Li, Prof. Theodore Yao-Tsu Wu, Prof. Shu Chien, Prof. Lap-Chee Tsui, Prof. Tso-Ping Ma, Prof. Francois Mathey, Prof. Ryoji Noyori, Prof. Muming Poo, Prof. Roberta L. Rudnick, Prof. Sumio Iijima, and Prof. D. Roger J. Owen.

The CAS has by far a total of 64 foreign members. Three of the new-elected Members are Nobel Laureates, which are American physicist David Gross, Israeli chemist Avram Hershko and Japanese chemist Ryoji Noyori.
